The students and instructors at the Academy of Kempo Karate believe that the foundation of our organization is built one student at a time in our children’s program. Our goal is simple: we want to develop exemplary martial artists who are strong in both skill and character, and feel that achievement of this goal begins with the instruction of our youngest practitioners. We utilize an age-based approach to our children’s instructional curriculum, which is specifically designed to develop the traits necessary for success not only in the martial arts, but at home, school, and in life as a whole. Our instructors approach children’s training with passion and with an understanding of the physical, mental, and emotional development stages commonly associated with various age groups. With that knowledge in mind, The Academy of Kempo Karate divides children’s classes into 3 age groups: the first being children who are 4-6 years of age, the second being children who are 7-9 years old, and the last being those who are 10-12 years old. At 13 years of age, students enter the adult program. All of our classes, regardless of age, are taught in an encouraging manner, with an emphasis on building confidence, social interaction skills, and martial discipline.
Those students who are 4-6 years of age represent our youngest practitioners. It is in this age group that we begin to instill many of the skills that are so necessary for success in later programs, and in life as a whole. While learning the basics of Kempo Karate, skills such as effective listening, following directions, and mind-body coordination are taught and reinforced. Instructors keep the training fun and interesting for the students through a variety of game play activities in addition to the standard karate instruction. This helps the students enjoy their training, thereby translating into increased comprehension.
The 7-9 year old students are at an amazing point in their ability to train. The instruction for this age range has an increased emphasis on martial technique, while still developing the social, mental, and physical skills necessary for life success. Classes are still administered in a fun and exciting manner, however the techniques are representative of the student’s increased maturity and physical capacity.
One of the most impressive classes to instruct is that of the 10-12 year old students. These students begin the process of preparing for the heightened demands of training in the adult class. Students in this age range demonstrate an ever-increasing desire to learn, and our instructors are more than happy to satisfy those desires. The curriculum taught to these students mirrors that of the adult class, with instruction being provided in an encouraging and exciting manner. It is our desire to see each of these students progress seamlessly into the adult class, having already developed the skills and confidence necessary for continued success.
