American Kempo-Karate Association

Welcome! The American Kempo Karate Association is the sole governing body of the Shorinji Toraken Ryu System, a gendai sogo bujutsu (modern composite martial art). The Shorinji Toraken Ryu curriculum centers around teaching students effective goshin jutsu (self-defense) skills comprised from principles and concepts of several sub-arts: Kempo, Jujutsu, Karate and Kobudo. Only through rigorous training in these various arts can a student comprehend the Shorinji Toraken Ryu System in its entirety.

Sho-rin-ji translates as little forest temple denotes the system's birthplace currently known as the Honan Province where it began as a single art known as Chu'an Fa. Tora-ken or "tiger fist" gives some insight into the nature of the system. The tiger's aggressive spirit symbolizes the systems philosophy of attacking first when fighting cannot be avoided. Fist signifies a student's primary weapon. Ryu or formalized martial tradition denotes the systems as a sect of martial philosophy.
